Elsie has been with me since she was five weeks old. She is a runt, but what she lacks in size she makes up for in work ethic! She’s the first to seek out the craziest cow in a mob and show them who is boss. She’s a smart worker, she knows which cow is the leader and once she can control them, the rest of the mob follows. Elsie seems to think our work is just one big game that we put on for her. For example, if we’re using the crush she’ll dart around and stick her head through the gaps to bark at their ankles, and every animal is sent out of the crush with a bark to their face! As soon as the work is done she has a reputation for being fetch crazy for anything that resembles a ball – sticks, stumps, honey nuts, golf balls, tennis balls, footballs, soccer balls…

I manage the day-to-day operations on our family sheep and cattle farm near Bagingarra, WA. I’ve been working with dogs for about five years, and I’ve found they are always the most eager workers on the farm. We work on slightly undulating country, with clear sandy paddocks. My dog Elsie makes the stock work a lot easier, and I’m keen to prove how much distance Elsie covers on a work day. We’re good friends and we do most things in life together, both on and off the farm.
